Shop online to save the planet…

At a time when green buzz-words such as ‘food miles’, ‘shop local’ and ‘slow fashion’ are being bandied about by just about everyone with any kind of environmental conscience, doing your shopping online may seem to be the antithesis of all the good work being done, but look a little more closely, and you might just find that the internet is a greener option than the shopping mall.

If you are anything like me, the simple thought of walking down the high street at this time of year will be enough to bring on a severe attack of the nerves. This is where the internet really comes into its own. With thousands of stress free retail outlets just a click away, the days of spending hours trawling round town in the freezing cold hunting for that perfect gift for a special someone is long gone, and it couldn’t have happened sooner. It turns out that my fear of Christmas shopping is good for the environment as well. Bonus!

By logging on to do your shopping, you can avoid an unnecessary trip in the car, and with it avoid using ever more precious fuel, which in turn does away with quite a few nasty emissions. The fact that the prices online are often quite a bit cheaper online doesn’t hurt either. When you add into the equation the issue the amount of energy your average retail outlet or supermarket uses whilst trying to sell you a whole host of shiny new things, it becomes apparent that logging on makes a whole lot more sense than going out.

Some might argue that the benefits of online shopping are outweighed by the fact that it still needs to be delivered to you somehow, but let’s be honest here – one van doing the rounds instead of a multitude of cars makes a whole lot of environmental sense, doesn’t it? Most of the time, shopping is delivered by your regular postman, and he would have done the rounds anyway, so really there’s no harm done.

Another question surrounds the packaging which is necessitated by online retail, and this is a fair point, but if you are reading this it is safe to assume that you are well versed in recycling packaging materials in a variety of ways. Reusing packaging is one of the simplest ways of recycling, and yet again it saves the planet, and saves you money. Is it just me, or is there a recurring theme here somewhere?
