Stay safe in the sun

The BBC tells us that every day, on average; at least two people in Britain under the age of 35 are diagnosed with the deadliest form of skin cancer – malignant melanoma.   A scary fact, I think, when I  consider I’ve always had rather burn-prone skin.  My genealogy originates in the wilds of central Scotland and I’m a closet ginger so I was never one to “bronze up”.  My skin has two stages of colour; white and painfully red.

From a young age, my parents covered me in high factor sun lotion.  I tried to tan by lowering the factor I used but it ended up looking like someone had half-heartedly tried to colour in the space between my freckles with a blunt crayon and always had the inevitable white hand shape on my back as I tried to put the lotion on myself.  By my twenties, I came to accept the fact that I would never get that healthy glow and I was doomed to have the paleness of skin tone that Goths could only wish for.

Everybody knows that the sun’s rays can be very dangerous. When enough solar energy lands on Earth each day to power the whole population for an entire year, the Sun’s apparently infinite power is beyond dispute and by comparison, a human’s skin doesn’t really stand a chance.
